An Eagle  Idaho  homeschool family recently lost their home  in the lightening-caused grass fire that burned down five homes in the Treasure Valley. They have lost all of their possessions. CHOIS received the following email from their support group leader. If you should happen to have any of these books that you would like to loan or donate to the Jackson family, please email info@chois.org and let us know. Read the rest of this entry »

CHOIS is thrilled that Math Counts has changed their minds.

On Tuesday, August 17, MATHCOUNTS, a prestigious foundation dedicated to the encouragement of math among middle school students, announced a ban on homeschoolers competing as teams.

Banning homeschool teams from the annual competition program was a shock to the homeschool community because MATHCOUNTS had allowed homeschoolers to compete as teams for the past 20 years. Read the rest of this entry »

Through activist courts and the threat of ratifying the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), big government intrudes on families more and more. Already, the liberty of parents to direct the upbringing of their children has greatly eroded in federal courts and in such settings as public schools, local libraries, and your doctor’s office.

The traditional right of parents to make decisions for their children (absent abuse or neglect) is now “substantially diminished” at the federal level, and its demise is trickling down to the states. Only an amendment to add this liberty to the text of the U.S. Constitution can give back to our families the legal protections they deserve.

Please take action. Click here to stop big government’s takeover of the family by supporting Senate Resolution 519 (which opposes ratifying the CRC) and the Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

    Pass It On!

CHOIS received the following correspondence from one of our sister organizations in North Carolina. It begins with a letter from the President of  North Carolinians for Home Education to Math Counts addressing some of the reasons why Math Counts has banned homeschool teams from competition. The second letter is Math Counts response. If this is an issue that you feel strongly about, we suggest that you write a courteous response to Math Counts.

    Dear MathCounts staff,

My wife and I homeschooled our four children through high school, and
they all participated in MathCounts. All of our children grew to
appreciate mathematics as a result of their participation. Read the rest of this entry »

CHOIS received the following email about a website that helps parents find free and discounted curriculum. We hope you find this helpful.

My name is Carrie Fernandez and I am a homeschooling mom of 2 girls. I am going on my fifth year of homeschooling, and loving every minute of it.

I wanted to introduce myself and a couple of resources to you that you could perhaps share with your members. There is a new website called Curriculum Share that I launched on 7-23-10. The intentions of this website are to build a homeschooling community where homeschoolers can get free curriculum. In just over 2 weeks we have almost 1,000 members already sharing their curriculum with other homeschoolers. Read the rest of this entry »

This news release came our way and we hope you find it helpful.

OCEAN PARK, WA—After spending much of the past year hunting down scholarships available to home-schooled students, David Craft realized there was a problem. “There are lots of scholarships available only to those in traditional schools, but none to speak of just for homeschooled students,” he lamented. “When I searched online for ‘homeschool scholarships’ I came up with only a few results, most of which had nothing to do with homeschooling.” Read the rest of this entry »

CHOIS received this letter from HSLDA President, Mike Smith.

    Dear Homeschool Families:

Many of you have already heard that Sono Harris, wife of Gregg Harris, has been diagnosed with stage four cancer which has thrust the Harris family into a crisis. I recently spoke with Gregg to find out the latest report, and he shared with me that God has been very gracious to Sono and the rest of the family. Sono is weakening daily but has experienced very little pain. Sono speaks of seeing Jesus soon. Although they have not been given any indication as to when she might receive her total healing, Gregg has indicated that it could be any time now. Read the rest of this entry »

    Gregg and Sono Harris.jpg

“The best thing a man can do
for his children is love their mother.”
    - John Wooden

Sono is continuing to prepare to be with her beloved Lord Jesus, and thankfully she is not in much pain. She is very weak, but is still helping make preparations for Gregg and the children after her departure from this life. She is truly is remarkable woman of faith! Read the rest of this entry »

The CHOIS webmaster has been kind enough to post the Trojan Horse DVD information on our website and it can now be purchased there. This movie was shown at the CHOIS Convention for the last two years and many of our attendees wanted to be able to own a copy for themselves.  It is available for purcahse at www.chois.org
